He added, “It’s a form of cryptography that basically allows for verifiable computation. It means that an application runs a piece of code and you offer a proof that this result came from that code. That magic basically allows you to shortcut and fast track. A ton of steps that you would otherwise run the network for you.

By doing this, the game can use the company’s own servers to do things like create in-game items instead of running on the blockchain in a way that consumes a lot of power and costs. Wu says you could take a complex argument, like fighting a boss, and play out the entire battle between your character and the boss — but do it off the blockchain instead. It uses less computing power and energy, but may be less secure.

The game company can create a complete log, or a complete transcript of what happened throughout the process and provide the final results with evidence. The proof is sent to the blockchain and the network that verifies the transaction on the blockchain can verify the proof. “The zero-knowledge proof techniques we use allow you to sell some of that computational resource on-chain for faster validation,” Wu said. “And so what you normally do in the chain is run every single program from Genesis to the present and verify it. In this model, you have to do that. But instead of actually rewriting the computation, basically you run a proof, you check every Proofs for state transitions. And so the difference is that using a proof to test a proof takes about 15 milliseconds instead of 500 milliseconds or more.

You can’t completely avoid computing costs, but you can support more transactions because the network can check more transactions at the same time as before, Wu said.
